Energy analysis and simulation softwares, such as eQuest, are extremely useful tools for buildings. Through all the phases of the design process, thanks to this kind of software, it is possible to have an idea of the future energy consumption of the building.
The results could be more or less accurate based on the precision and quantity of the input parameter changed.
In our case, an energy analysis can be useful in this early phase of the design for the selection of the best HVAC system.
Unfortunatly it is not easy to simulate an emergency shelter due to its temporary nature, and the results provided by eQuest could be more accurate if more information about the specific building would be known.
However, this kind of tools are very useful if used well, specially in a selection process. The possibility to have a comparison of the energy consumption for different system, even though most of the information about the building are missing, allow and help engineers to make a decision, and can be useful to present the reasons of that decision to the clients.
Several cases were analyzed, based on the size of the building:
and on the location:
Other assumptions have been made in order to simulate an emergy shelter, specific material and HVAC systems generally used for emergency shelters are not always available in eQuest, thus, light weight material were chosen for the cladding and electric radiators and evaporative coolers were chosen for heating and cooling system respectively, in order to simulate one of the most common case for this kind of building, (Window unit climatization and electric radiator heating)
Simulations have been performed for each of the 15 cases, all the results are presented in the .zip file below.
